Conservation Corner

Welcome to Poultrygeist Manor.

Every homestead has a haunted wing. Ours is the coop.

Current residents: eight Mottled Java chicks, four weeks into taking over the place.

Mottled Javas are the second oldest breed of chicken developed in America, and one of the rarest. They're on The Livestock Conservancy's Critical list. Fewer remain than most people would guess for a bird this historic.

Why Javas?

Because they're calm, they're hardy, and they nearly disappeared. The Java helped build other American breeds — the Plymouth Rock, the Rhode Island Red, the Jersey Giant — and then those breeds eclipsed it. A bird that fed homesteads for generations shouldn't vanish because the industry moved on. So we keep them. Every flock counts.

They'll earn their keep: eggs eventually, garden patrol soon, and endless hours of entertainment in between.

Navajo-Churro sheep are next on the wish list. Another old breed, another critical status.

Follow the flock

The waitlist hears from the Manor first — growth spurts, first eggs, and the occasional crime.
